Maintenance in Sweden

In winter, the locos are really put to the test!

In Sweden, mgw Service is responsible for maintenance for 47 locomotives (Bombardier and Siemens). The nine-person team in charge includes six mobile technicians. Temperatures in the country vary between -45°C in winter and 27°C in summer. These conditions create some serious challenges for the technical teams whether in terms of locomotive wear and tear or the maintenance operations needed to keep them in good working order. The particularly difficult winter conditions make it sometimes necessary to add on a day of workshop time just to let melt the heavy blocks of ice that form on the locomotive. The technical team covers over 1,800 km in Sweden, sometimes working in very far-flung places that are quickly accessible only by air.

Services close to where customers need them

The interoperable locomotives run from Sweden to Germany via Denmark. mgw Service sets itself apart from other private maintenance companies through its capabilities and its people’s accreditation, in both Sweden and Germany, to check Kombi ATC, the Swedish/Danish train protection system. Since 2017, the team has been working on a new subject: full completion of R1 revisions directly at the premises of its customer, Green Cargo, in Eskilstuna (Sweden). Five R1 revisions have already been carried out on BR 185 locomotives and more are scheduled for this year!
